CAUSTICIZED POTASSIUM LIGNITE

Potassium lignite is an organic potassium source containing 40% potassium by weight. It is completely water-soluble and is used as an alternative to potassium chloride for providing an increased level of potassium to improve shale inhibition and wellbore stability in applications where chlorides are undesirable.

APPLICATIONS


POTASSIUM LIGNITE is used to increase soluble potassium for shale inhibition when chlorides from potassium chloride are undesirable. While it can be the sole source of potassium, POTASSIUM LIGNITE is more often used in combination with other potassium-base products such as causticized potassium lignite, chrome lignite and KOH. A 1 lb/bbl (2.85 kg/m3) addition of POTASSIUM LIGNITE provides approximately 1,135 mg/l potassium. Normal treatments range from 1 to 4 lb/bbl (2.85 to 11.4 kg/m3).

POTASSIUM LIGNITE is completely soluble in fresh water, seawater and salt water. It can be used in dispersed or no dispersed systems and provides potassium at any pH. POTASSIUM LIGNITE is especially useful when the desired potassium level is higher than can be obtained practically with conventional potassium products. For example, in chlorides-restricted situations, POTASSIUM LIGNITE is the best product for increasing the potassium level when using non-dispersed systems where high concentrations of potassium are needed for shale inhibition. POTASSIUM LIGNITE can supply any potass ium level needed, whereas treatments of KOH and other potassium products can only be used based on pH and mud property requirements. 

POTASSIUM LIGNITE should be added to the system through the chemical barrel in the same manner that potassium hydroxide or caustic soda is added. POTASSIUM LIGNITE is occasionally packaged in 100-lb (45.4-kg) drums, making it convenient to use the drum as a chemical barrel. To do this, place the drum on the pits, punch a hole in the bottom, open the top and add water slowly, adjusting the water so that the product is added during one complete circulation.


HEALTH AND SAFETY DATA


The product may cause skin eye irritation, avoid contact with eye and skin by wearing goggles and gloves. For skin contact wash with water and soap while eye and contact flush eye well with water for 15 minutes and call for medical attention. Not considered to be a fire and explosion hazard.

LIMITATIONS


When initially added to an untreated mud system, POTASSIUM LIGNITE may cause flocculation, as do other sources of potassium. This initial flocculation will subside with time as the potassium exchange occurs on the reactive solids and the potassium level of the system increases to a sufficient level
Increases the Mf alkalinity value. It does not affect the pH, Pf, Pm or the pH:Pf method of detecting carbonate/bicarbonate contamination. The Mf value as an indicator of carbonate/bicarbonate contamination should be ignored when POTASSIUM LIGNITE is used
Contains potassium which may not be acceptable for all applications, depending on local environmental regulations and considerations


TOXICITY AND HANDLING


Bioassay information is available upon request. Inhibitive potassium systems with high levels of potassium ions can have adverse impact on aquatic animals and plants used in laboratory testing and on the environment. For this reason, local environmental regulatory requirements and considerations should be evaluated prior to using potassium systems and products. Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the precautions as described on the Transportation and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
