DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid)


DEFOAMER has been specifically designed for use in a new concept for treating potential foaming problems in aphron containing water-base fluids. DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid) is unique because it has the ability to treat surface foams in an aphron-base fluid without removing the aphrons.

(1). Physical State : The material shall be a clear, homogenous liquid at 24 ± 2 °C ,free from visible impurities.

(2). Performance Test : 

(i) Prepare 7% Bentonite :
Suspension (VISION approved Bentonite) in Distilled Water (7 g of Bentonite + 97 ml of Distilled Water) and age for 72 hours at 90 ± 2 °C. Stir the Suspension in a Hamilton Beach Mixer at low speed for 15 minutes and load it to 1.30 Specific Gravity with Barytes. Treat the loaded Mud with 3% Gypsum (w/v) followed by 3% (w/v) Chrome Lignosulphonate (CLS). Adjust the pH between 9.0 — 9.5 by adding appropriate aliquots of 5N Caustic Soda solution. Stir for 30 minutes with a Hamilton Beach Mixer at high speed. The brand of CLS added should be so selected that specific gravity of stirred Mud falls below 1.0.

(ii) Treat this Mud with 500 ppm of defoamer sample. Stir for 30 seconds and determine the Specific Gravity of the Mud.
Specific Gravity of the mud treated with defoamer should not be less than 1.28. 


Foaming, the entrapment and breakout of large gas bubbles, is a common problem in many aqueous and non-aqueous drilling fluids and can cause undesirable fluid behavior. There are many types of surface active agents used either singularly or in combination with one another to handle foam problems in water base fluids. Some of these additives are referred to as anti-foaming agents. They are added to a system to prevent foam from forming. Other types of additives are referred to as defoamers. These additives are used to reduce or eliminate foam that already exists in a system.

Normally, both types of additives are used and are usually effective at concentrations below 1% by weight. DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid) is primarily considered a defoamer but will act as an anti-foamer under certain conditions.
The selection of a proper defoamer for a given fluid system is still more of an art than it is a science. Selection is usually based on trial and error testing. Each type of defoamer will function under some optimal condition for a given type of system. Small-scale testing of defoamers for both the type and concentration required is usually necessary to obtain optimum performance. Although other defoamers can be used, DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid) has been designed to use specifically with aphron-base drilling fluids when and if there is a need for foam elimination.

DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid) is most effectively applied by spraying the neat product as a fine mist directly on the foam on the fluid surface. It can also be diluted with a hydrocarbon oil, mineral oil or synthetic oil and either sprayed directly on the foam on the fluid surface or added with a chemical pump directly to the fluid. Properly prepared aphron-base fluids do not foam. DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid) treatments will only be required when the low-shear-rate viscosity (LSRV) of the fluid has dropped below acceptable levels. Such a condition might occur upon massive dilution of the aphron-base fluid. Under normal circumstances, any foam occurring in an aphron-based fluid should be treated by increasing the LSRV to an acceptable level.
DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid) should only be considered for use as insurance during initial makeup or dilution when the proper LSRV has not been obtained.6

DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid) is a multi component blend of surface active materials based on selected cloud point glycols.


Precautions should be taken to keep the product from exposure to exceptionally low temperatures. Although low temperatures will not affect the performance of the product, it will result in a significant increase in viscosity and more difficulty in dispersing small quantities in water.

DEFOAMER (Aphron-Base Fluid) is packaged in 55gal (208L) drums. Store in dry, well ventilated area. Keep container closed. Keep away from heat, sparks and flames. Store away from incompatibles. Follow safe warehousing practices regarding palletizing, banding, shrink wrapping and/or stacking.
