Pour Point Depressant

The waxes present in most crude oils include n-alkanes, iso-alkanes, alkyl cyclic compounds and alkyl aromatics. In most crude n-Alkanes are the predominant species. The amount and distribution of these n-Alkanes is crude specific. Short-branched chains are the next most common. These have a significant impact on wax deposition characteristics.
The wax appearance temperature (WAT) is the temperature at which, on a cooling cycle, the crude oil first precipitates solid wax. This is arguably the single most important characteristic in examining wax deposition potential in crude oil. The deposition of wax leads to several problems in reduced production and impaired flow assurance. Severe deposition can lead to loss of production and pipeline blockage etc.

There are four main categories of such chemical additives:
Crystal Modifiers
Pour Point Depressants
Pour Point depressants will be dependent on the system to which they are to be applied and on the hydrocarbon profile of the crude. Field experience shows typical dose rates when applied to main export pipelines and topsides process streams to be in the region of 100-1000ppm. An effective dosing level from a laboratory test rarely correlates well with dose rates observed in the field and it is therefore recommended that the actual dose rate for products be substantially reduced during field application. It would be recommended that optimum dose levels be assessed in the field.

Characteristic and Property

Physical Appearance : The Material shall be homogenous free flowing liquid at 25 °C , free from visible impurities. It should remain in liquid state when kept in water bath maintained at 25 °C for 4 hours.
FLASH POINT : The Flash Point of the PPD when tested by 'Flash Point by Pensky-Marten Closed Cup Tester' of ASTM D - 93 methods shall not be less than 0 6.
Solubility of 10% (w/v) of the Sample in Xylene (LR) ……………………. Solution should be clear
Performance Test :
(a) The Material shall be tested for its performance on mixture of Jolwa EPS Composite Crude Oil, which has the following properties :
(i)    Pour Point = 33 — 39    °C 
(ii)    Wax Content = 20 — 25% and Dahej Condensate mixed in 4:1 ratio. 

(b) Test Conditions :
(i)    Doping Temperature: 60 ± 1 °C 
(ii)    Curing Temperature: 60 ± 1 °C 
(iii)    Curing Time: 30 minutes 

(c) The Composite Crude Oil is doped with 500 ppm (w/v) of the Sample at 60 ± 1 °C. After the curing time of 60 minutes , Pour Point is determined as per method lP - 441 / ASTM D - 5853 and theological parameters viz. Plastic Viscosity and Yield Point are determined at 22    °C, by using a Fann VG Meter or Equivalent .
The treated composite crude oil should have a modified pour point of 18 °C or below. Plastic Viscosity and Yield Point of the treated crude should be 15 cP (Maximum) and 10 lb/100 sq. ft (Maximum), respectively.

(d) The Treated Crude Oil is aged for 3 days at ambient temperature and then Pour Point and Rheological Properties (at 22    °C) are determined, as above at the end of three days.
Parameters of the aged sample should be as under :
(i)    Pour Point = not more than 21 °C 
(ii)    Plastic Viscosity =20 cP (Maximum).
(iii)    Yield Point = 15 lbs/100 sq. ft (Maximum)

Pour Point have been applied to many fields where crudes often fall below the wax appearance temperature e.g. main export pipelines, topsides process systems and storage tanks.

Toxicity and Handling

It can be stored in closed containers away from direct sunlight at ambient temperature. During handling, direct contact with human body is to be avoided. Safety goggles and gloves are recommended for safe handling.

Packaging and Storage

Products can be supplied in 200 liter drums and as per buyer requirement.
